Alkaloids characterized by the unique bicyclo [2.2.2] ring system, constituted mainly from tryptophan, proline, or substituted proline derivatives, where the olefinic unit of the isoprene moiety is usually oxidatively cyclized across the alpha carbon of a cyclic dipeptide (a piperazinedione).
